Elrod Friedman has a deep commitment to pro bono work and community service. Our attorneys and staff believe that we have a duty to serve people in need, and the organizations that assist them. We are steadfast in our dedication to providing free legal service, and to engage with our community, to positively impact our communities. Pro bono and community service are part of the fabric of our firm.

Pro Bono Legal Service

Throughout our professional careers, we have all placed a high priority on serving the needy and the underserved. To us, pro bono service is an obligation. Indeed, we require each of our attorneys to annually contribute significant hours to pro bono clients. Our pro bono efforts run the gamut of litigation and transactional assistance. We work with a wide variety of clients and organizations, including veterans’ assistance, immigration matters, urban farming and workforce organizations, and legal aid clinics, to name a few.

Signature Pro Bono Projects and Cases

  • Church reorganization from antiquated religious corporation to Illinois not-for-profit corporation
  • Zoning approvals for new youth center in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood
  • Political asylum for LGBTQ refugee fleeing sexual violence
  • Comprehensive real estate transactional assistance for not-for-profit land conservancy for urban community gardens
  • Land use, real estate taxation, and employment matters for Englewood job training organization
  • Custody of minor child for active duty servicemember in cross-border action against an abusive parent
  • Construction and Chicago entitlements for new K-8 religious educational institution.

Community Service

We volunteer and take leadership roles in governmental bodies, nonprofit organizations, civic initiatives, higher education institutions and economic development groups. Elrod Friedman attorneys have served as presidents of bar associations, chairs of statewide associations and have held leadership positions in national nonprofit organizations. From cultural events to public education programs, we strive to donate our knowledge, experience, and resources to advance the legal profession, improve the civil and criminal justice systems, and enhance the quality of life throughout Chicagoland.
